Developed from the DNA-based memory cubes of the mid-22nd century, these holographic-based devices with built-in computing first appeared at the end of the 25th century as a way to standardize memory storage. Each cube could contain up to an exabyte or a million terabytes of storage. A form of spectroscopy is used for readout in most cases, with multiple lasers being used for high data rates.
