Vigilance: A Novelette

Image: NASA

The third story in the Future Chron Universe: From The Earth Series, Vigilance, is up on this site.

The history of freedom repeats itself. And the costs are always the same.

The settlers of the new Republic of Mars were in a struggle for their freedom against powerful forces that would stop at nothing.

For the Martians the costs were life, property and domestic security. But the true cost was vigilance, eternal if need be.

Vigilance is set in the future (2070s) and is the third story in the From The Earth Series which itself is set in the much larger Future Chron Universe

The Future Chron Universe consists of 9 novels, 1 short novel, 15 novellas/novelettes, and 8 short stories.

Vigilance is also included in the economical collection From The Earth: Complete which contains ten other stories and a Timeline that sets the stories into the larger universe.

Hard Science Fiction - Old School.

Science of The Einstein Nexus

Image: Bruce Rolff

My current work in progress, The Einstein Nexus, is my first to deal with time travel. The supporting extrapolated science is described below.

The Science

In 1935 Einstein and Rosen wrote a paper in which the Einstein-Rosen Bridge was introduced. This appeared to be a “bridge” between widely separated regions of the universe. At the middle of the bridge was a singularity. 50 years later, the results were used by Throne and Morris to construct traversable wormholes. But there is another interpretation of the bridge, that is, at the singularity, the arrow of time reverses.

The next story in the series From The Earth is now on this site. You can read this story here, War Through The Pines.

What starts in space may not stay in space. Many governments today are preparing for war in space. Most people today are unaware of it. When will it happen? How will it be conducted? What will be the effect on a young boy just coming of age?

Trillion Year Spree

In 1986, Brian Aldiss, in his book Trillion Year Spree, had this to say about science fiction coming out of the 60s:

In 1969, Donald Wollheim, then guiding light of Ace Books, published an anthology called Men on the Moon. He persuaded twenty-seven writers to give their views on the first lunar landing, which took place in July of that year. Isaac Asimov, John Brunner, E. C. Tubb, Alan Nourse, and others had their say.

Only Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury, and Poul Anderson were full of unqualified praise and excitement. Most of the authors
took a very sceptical view of the proceedings. The phrase on the plaque, “We Come in Peace for All Mankind”, stuck in their gullets; they started remembering the Indians.

Michael Moorcock quoted J. G. Ballard's wry remark: “If I were a Martian I'd start running now!” Isaac Asimov hoped we

Whatsoever You Do: A Novelette

I have begun to publish the series From The Earth on this site. You can read the first story, Whatsoever You Do, now.

A pandemic had long been predicted. Now it was happening and a former graduate student, Jack Jackson, may have the key to its containment, synthetic biology.

But because in the court of public opinion synthetic biology is feared, it has been forbidden in the money conscious halls of medical research.

How many will have to die before they change their minds?

Whatsoever You Do is set in the future (2030s) and is the first story in the From The Earth Series which is set in the larger Future Chron Universe.

This is the second part of the reader's guide series for my books which will hopefully help a reader find something they would like to read. Not all my books are associated with a universe but those that are group as follows: Future Chron, Remembered Earth, Manifold Earth, Ancient Earth and Forgotten Earth. The universes are a way to organize a series of books that share the same science and technology, same social background, and sometimes the same characters.

MarsX

My next release is a novel called MarsX. It is the story of how mankind settles the red planet. Except, it's not the usual story. The motivation is the key, and that's tied to the development of AI.

When I wrote the three novelettes that became this novel, development in AI was not entering the knee of the exponential as it appears to be now. The AI in the story naturally developed into a much bigger role than I planned. Looking back almost a year later, what I thought was years away may be directly ahead. The frontier AI companies think super-AI is close, I don't know, but the difference between fiction and fact continues to compress.

The paperback will be available at online stores April 20, the eBook May 20. If you would like to read it before then, it is
