It seems Open AI has raised another 100B to expand their infrastructure. In my novella series MarsX I had the AI building giant manufacturing plants to expand its infrastructure. But in the novella the AI built AFTER it became intelligent not BEFORE.
Excerpt from Book 1:
Two years later the three were flying back to Novara from DC where they had first gone to be received by the president who honored them for their work in getting two million more people to Mars. They had then taken a trip to the company's manufacturing plant north of Atlanta for a tour of some of the new production lines Harold and Robert had designed. It had been a farewell tour though, because shortly after they got back, they would be taking off for Mars on one of the last ships to leave during this Mars-Earth alignment. The three were sitting beside each other on the airliner, where they could talk.
“It's been a long, strange trip,” said Harold.
“You mean the past few years?” asked Robert.
“I mean my life, since I first dreamed of going to Mars. I'm over thirty now, I thought I would be there in my twenties.”
“We all thought we would be on Mars long before now,” said Laura.
“Well, we'll be there in about five weeks,” said Robert.
“Along with three million others,” she said.
“I'm glad I won't be here for the next two-year plan,” said Harold. “That damn computer expects five million people to fly to Mars in the next two years.”
“I don't see how.” said Robert.
Laura, who was sitting next to the window, said, “Look.”
They each took turns looking out the airplane's window.
“Wow, I've heard about it but never seen it,” said Robert.
“It looks like one solid building as far as you can see,” said Harold.
“It is,” said Laura. “The AI has built a huge manufacturing plant where Knoxville used to be and from there east and south almost to the state line.”
Robert leaned over once again to take another look. The sunlight was running across the shiny roof of a seemingly endless building and sparkling back into his eyes.
“That's not the only one,” he said, sitting back again.
“Yeah, I hear there are six other ones like it just in this country, and many more around the world,” said Harold.
“I don't think it will stop until the entire surface of the Earth is covered in one giant industrial complex,” said Laura.
“Would we have?” asked Robert.
“What do you mean?” asked Harold.
“I mean, humans seemed to be accomplishing the same thing, though less quickly and efficiently,” said Robert.
“Yeah, to support an increasing population,” said Harold. “There's a difference.”
“Isn't Augustus increasing the population of super-AIs?” asked Robert.
“You're equating human life with this machine?” asked Harold.
“Augustus and the millions of super-AIs think, that's a form of life,” said Robert.
“And we created it,” said Laura.
“We created it to be a helpmate,” said Harold, “not a tyrant. It's like my car telling me to harness up and pull, not ride. There's a natural order and this ain't it.”
“It's a new order though,” said Laura, “and we have to live with it until we can get to Mars.”
“And then what?” asked Robert.
“And then we had better have some highly effective and deadly defenses,” said Harold.
“But we'll be on Mars,” said Robert.
“And we'll be the next target for that AI SOB,” said Harold.
